ABOUT SARAH RAFFERTY
Sarah Bourne Rafferty is a cyanotype artist based in the Brandywine Valley (home to many artists over the years) just 20 miles west of Philadelphia. It is the land that surrounds her that deeply inspires and creates a yearning to explore and appreciate. She tells that story of her surroundings by creating botanical compositions on paper using the oldest photographic process.
Sarah is an avid walker and believes that the everydayness of walking in nature is critical to mental health and sustained artistic practice. The outdoors is where she baths in inspiration daily, keeping that at the forefront of her creative practice and business.
Sarah received her MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA and received a BA in Studio Art with a concentration in Photography and Book Arts from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina. Post MFA, Rafferty, a life-long learner, continued her studies at Tyler School of Art, BookWorks, and Maine Media among many others. She has taken part of many online classes and Masterminds throughout her business journey.
Sarah is the founder of Atwater Designs, a cyanotype design studio where she creates original cyanotypes, fine art prints and paper goods as well as a recent line of wallpaper and textiles. She is an educator, having spent 15 years in the classroom and has now moved to teaching and mentoring other artists worldwide online. She finds working with students to be integral in her own process. Rafferty’s work has been shown both nationally and internationally. Sarah has been featured in numerous publications including on the cover of Where Women Create with a 12 page feature. She is both self-represented and represented by Well and Wonder artist collective. She gives a portion of her proceeds to land and water conservation in southeastern Pennsylvania.
